We can all agree that 2020 has been everything but typical. So who says you need to slave away in the kitchen all day for the perfect holiday meal this year? Not me. As an evolving society, we need to drop the expectation that holidays must involve a home-cooked meal. The holiday season is about spending time with loved ones. Skipping the home-cooked meal doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the holiday vibe you’ve always had. With intentional plating techniques, the proper decor, delicious food and a smile, you can make takeout the new tradition. The date you host your holiday dinner will determine the takeout options available in your area however I have crafted a variety of different takeout options for the perfect holiday spread.
Traditional Turkey (or Tofu-Turkey) Dinner
If you’re looking to have the traditional turkey dinner without the hassle, look no further than your local grocery deli! If you are in Ontario or British Columbia, Whole Foods has a turkey dinner option available for pre-order (with vegan alternatives available) that allows you to mix and match items including potatoes, green beans and all of your other holiday favs!
Middle Eastern
Looking to have a beautiful, flavour-filled dinner? The middle east has a wide range of options that are perfect for a holiday meal with family and friends. You can start the evening off with a mix of dips (my personal fav is the muhammara from Souk Tabule in Toronto) and pita bread for table bites, followed by a mix of shawarma, falafel, salad and rice.
Sushi
Picture this: a table full of sushi…do I even have to say anything else? The beauty of a sushi platter is the versatility! You can prepare options for your vegan/vegetarian guests as well as your gluten-free guests (depending on your sushi location). Sharing a table of sushi will bring you and your guests together as you all take bits and pieces away from the platter.
Italian Food
Mamma Mia! Wait- I mean happy holidays! This year enjoy a holiday spread that is a guaranteed people-pleaser. From bisque to house-made pasta to an assortment of salads, Nordstrom’s Bar Verde and Bazille restaurants are our personal recommendation for an “everything but the turkey” Italian style feast. For only $190 they provide a dinner to serve up to 10 people (keeping it within the household circle, based on your local COVID restrictions) and allows you to choose a choice of soup, appetizer, salad, bread, side, entrée AND dessert! Just wait-it get’s even better! Chafing kits for hot food, a black tablecloth, serving utensils, plates, cutlery, and napkins are included. Someone call the doctor- we’re about to enter carb heaven!
Fast Food
Comfort food for the holidays? Bring it ON! Restaurants like Subway, A&W and Pizza Pizza have something for everyone (your vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free guests included). Although this may not be the most traditional option, it will be a guaranteed crowd-pleaser and remind you and your guests that the holidays are about more than the “perfect” home-cooked meal.
Greek Food
Not feeling the turkey dinner but want to keep it semi-classic? Try a spread of Greek food from your local Greek restaurant! From chicken souvlaki dinners to stuffed peppers, there is something for everyone in a spread like this. Pass the rice please! 😉
