The horseradish family of vegetables includes mustard, cauliflower, kale and wasabi. First, it was grown in Eastern Europe and North Africa but gained popularity in England as a side dish to beef and oysters.
The health benefits of horseradish set it apart from other condiments. The superstar condiment contains key nutrients such as calcium, dietary fibre, folate, manganese, magnesium, potassium, vitamin C, and zinc. Horseradish can really be served with almost anything.
Recipes
When you’re in the grocery store, grab a jar of horseradish and try it out. It’s a powerful spice that’s great for cocktails, dips, marinades, casseroles and more. Here are two recipes with Horseradish you can use to get creative in the kitchen.
Recipe 1: Portobello Mushroom Burger
Whether you are a vegetarian or even a meat lover (because we all like a good curve-ball now and then), using this meatless recipe is the perfect alternative.
Ingredients:
- 4 Portobello Mushroom Caps
- ½ cup horseradish
- 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons rosemary
- 2 teaspoons steak seasoning
- 4 slices of Swiss cheese
- 1/2 avocado, thinly sliced
- 1 tomato, thinly sliced
- 4 buns of choice
Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together vinegar, soy sauce, rosemary, steak seasoning, and the horseradish.
Step 2: Place mushroom caps in the bowl and evenly coat with the marinade. Make the mushrooms marinate for about 30 minutes, turning them occasionally.
Step 3: Heat up a grill or skillet. Once hot place the mushrooms on the grill and cook for about 6 minutes, occasionally brushing them with left over marinade.
Step 4: While the mushrooms are still cooking, top each with a slice of Swiss cheese. Continue to cook the mushrooms for about a minute, or until the cheese is nicely melted.
Step 5: Once done cooking, serve on your bun of choice along with avocado, tomato, and any other desired toppings. If any meat lovers insist on remaining carnivorous, well, that can be arranged!
Recipe 2: Blue Cheese Horseradish Hamburger
A summer barbecue is not complete without this easy but bold recipe. The unexpected combination of blue cheese and horseradish will put a delicious and spicy twist on your burger.

- 1 tablespoon tarragon
- Vegetable oil of choice
- 4 oz. crumbled blue cheese
- 2 tablespoons Dennis Original Horseradish
Step 1: In a medium bowl mix together beef, horseradish, mustard, and tarragon. Divide the mixture into 4 evenly sized balls.
Step 2: Flatten each ball into a round patty. Place each burger into an oil skillet and cook each burger for about 3 minutes.
Step 5: Flip the burgers and top with blue cheese. Cover and continue to cook for about 4 minutes more (medium-rare).
Step 6: When the burgers have finished cooking, serve out 2 tablespoons of Dennis Original Horseradish. Add along with your favourite toppings and enjoy!
