Now that sports like skateboarding and surfing are a part of the Olympics, the possibilities of sports are endless. Gambling.com has released a new study on the most popular extreme sports searched across the globe this year. This includes Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The study identifies the top ten extreme sports from across the globe and also goes into detail analyzing the chance of injury while playing sports, determining the sports that lead to the most extreme injuries.
So what are the most popular extreme sports for adrenaline junkies around the globe?
Popular Global Extreme Sport
From the study results, it’s clear Canadians love snowmobiling. Several Canadian cities are proud of snow sports such as snowmobiling, skiing, and ice skating, so it should come as no surprise that these are some of the most popular extreme sports in Canada.
Countries like New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Australia all share Mountain Biking as the most popular extreme sport. This is interesting, considering mountain biking is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about extreme sports. In the United Kingdom alone there were 1.8 million searches of Mountain Biking according to Gambling.com this past month. In North America (Canada and United States), Mountain BIking is the #2 most popular extreme sport.
Canadians aren’t just obsessed with snow sports, either. Other extreme events, like canoeing, BMX, jet skiing, and longboarding, are all extremely popular with adrenaline junkies. It’s a bit surprising that ice skating is less popular in Canada than it is in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. However, we also know that hockey is more of a national sport than ice skating so it may not be so extreme.
All across the global skateboarding has become a very popular extreme sport. What is more thrilling than a person riding standing up, balancing on a small board mounted on wheels. Much of the excitement of skateboarding rests in the riders’ creativity. Whether it be kick flips, jumping off obstacles with your board, or back flips this sport is not joke. Skateboarding is now an Olympic event, in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the first time. Which is why it’s exciting to see skateboarding as the most popular extreme sport in the United States and the #2 most popular extreme sport in the United Kingdom, as well as the #3 most popular extreme sport in New Zealand and Australia.
