Pailon del Diablo
Pailon del Diablo, affectionately known as the “Devil’s Cauldron”, is a tourist favourite spot. Located just 17 km from Baños, a city in Ecuador’s Tungurahua province near the Amazon Basin. This 80-metre waterfall is a treat to local hikers at the end of their trails. It tends to rain year-round in this region of Ecuador, making the waterfall extremely powerful and full in flow.
The waterfall is located in the small village of Rio Verde. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary was discovered at the falls and she now protects locals from volcanic activity.
Along the trails you’ll find beautiful flowers and breathe in crisp-fresh air. To visit Pailon del Diablo you’ll need to purchase a $2 ticket to enter. The trail is lined with steep staircases in narrow passageways and the stone steps can be slippery so be careful.
How To Get To The Waterfall
There are currently two pathways that lead to the Palion del Diablo waterfall. The newer one is a short 15 minute walk, crossing a few suspension brides and offers a mind-blowing panoramic view of Pailon del Diablo. The original path is recommended for people who are willing to experience a full-on hiking venture!
The original path starts at the main parking lot and it takes you through the forest. If you’re wanting to feel more connected with nature then this is the route for you.
Pack a raincoat because its about to get wet!
To reach the highest point of the trail you need to crawl through the La Grieta del Ciela path to get to the most iconic spot. If your claustrophobic and don’t do well with small spaces, its advised to opt out of this part. Once you leave the path you’ll arrive at a small viewing platform where you can walk behind the falls and really feel its power!
Remember to take your time and rest along the way during this trail.
The Suspension Bridge Viewpoint
After finishing at the falls, head down to the suspension bridge. There’s a beautiful panoramic view of Palion del Diablo from here. The bridge is 100% safe and can be accessed by both trails.
