Pinterest tends to be our go-to place when brainstorming and creating the ultimate travel bucket list. With so many of us not having travel in the past year and a half, I know that some of our travel boards are growing larger than ever before!
Earlier this year, Pinterest Business released the 2021 Travel Report highlighting some of the key trends and places they’ve seen in the last year. They’ve connected those trends to the most “pin-worthy” places in New Zealand that can’t be missed on your bucket list! With mountains, glaciers, fiords, vineyards, beaches, rainforests and more, New Zealand has everything to offer post-pandemic travellers.

Aoraki Mount Cook National Park
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is another park to visit in New Zealand! Its home to the countries highest mountains and the longest glaciers. Stargazers are able to see amazing constellations that can only be seen in the southern hemisphere, including the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way!
According to Ngāi Tahu legend, Aoraki and his three brothers were the sons of Rakinui, the Sky Father. While on a sea voyage, their canoe overturned on a reef. When the brothers climbed on top of their canoe, the freezing south wind turned them to stone. The canoe became the South Island (Te Waka o Aoraki); Aoraki and his brothers became the peaks of the Southern Alps.
Paparoa Track
There was a 30% increase in searches related to hiking compared to 2019 and New Zealand is home to beautiful landscapes and vast wilderness areas! Paparoa Track is the 10th Great Walk of New Zealand! Great Walks are hiking trails and the Paparoa Track crosses the Paparoa Range and provides breath-taking views, passing through varied landscapes, from subtropical rain forest to alpine tops, to the dramatic limestone gorge!
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Tongariro Alpine Crossing is known to be New Zealand’s greatest day walk! This unforgettable walking journey has magnificent views of lava flows, an active crater, steam vents and emerald-coloured lakes! Tongario Alpine Crossing is definitely going on my Pinterest board!
Northland
There was a 1.6x increase in searches related to nomad trailers and campers compared to 2019! Renting a camper van is a popular travel method in New Zealand, with incredible camping locations and DOC (Department of Conservation) sites across the entire country. The North Island lets you explore the country’s warmest regions of Auckland and Bay of Islands! Exploring the North Islands means you’ll visit picturesque beaches, marine adventures and locations of cultural significance such as the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.
Southland
The South Island is where you’ll find wildlife, fresh seafood and friendly locals! While you’re cruising through the south in your rental you can soak up the sights, sounds and tastes this beautiful place has to offer! Visit Hanmer Springs, go whale-watching in Kaikoura and taste Marlborough’s world-famous sauvignon blanc!
