Oversized lighting
Get that cool designer look with your lighting. Oversized pendants are the talk of the town right now and create a paired down casual custom feel in your kitchen.
Backsplash
Don’t be afraid of a little pattern and texture. We understand if you want to keep the colour neutral, but let’s play up those other elements to create something fun and interesting to pair with the rest of your stylish, not-so-standard kitchen.
Cabinetry profile
Let’s look beyond just your standard shaker profile. Especially if you are going custom, there is so much opportunity to create something unique and original. We love incorporating grated cabinetry, slab, and shaker style profiles together.

Colour
Give us that wow factor. A pop of colour on the island can make any of us at MBD weak in the knees. Choose a colour that you love. “But what if you don’t like that colour in 10 years?”. That’s totally fine. Respraying an island is a minor job and can easily be done. We would rather you absolutely LOVE your fun island colour for the years you have it, than feel just okay with your safe choice.
Faucet
One of the most used items in your kitchen. Let’s not make it an ordinary feature, no. We suggest splurging a little bit on getting the perfect faucet, there are so many to choose from but we recommend staying away from your $99.00 hardware store special if you want something special. You’ll never go wrong with a good quality faucet with simple lines in a matching finish to your hardware.
Art
People rarely think of putting art in their kitchens! This is again a great way to introduce colours into your space. A fun large-scale print that starts a conversation is a perfect piece to hand on the wall. Large white matting and a thin metal black frame will allow your art to speak for itself and allow your space to feel elevated.
Windows
Don’t leave your windows naked and bare. Most kitchen windows are calling out for a little pop of colour, pattern, and texture to soften a kitchen and finish your space off. No, we aren’t talking about your short half window curtains! We are talkin’ Roman blinds. These can be faux or operable. Either way, it gives you the perfect opportunity to bring a punch of colour and pattern to your kitchen in a less permanent way.
We think everyone should love the spaces they live in. You certainly don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to get there. Using some of these tips can help guide your weekend DIYs, Facebook marketplace hunts, and crafty side. Your place will be looking styled and sophisticated in no time.
