With more and more Europeans getting vaccinated, the European Union has announced the creation of a digital certificate, or passport, that will allow those who have been vaccinated, tested negative or recovered from COVID-19 to travel without restrictions.
The European Commission says that The Digital Green Certificate is will serve as proof that a person has either been vaccinated against COVID-19, received a negative test result or recovered from the virus. Furthermore, it will be in digital or paper format and will contain a QR code that has a digital signature that protects against forgery and falsification. Plus, it’s completely free.

The COVID travel certificate will contain all necessary key information such as name, date of birth, date of issuance, relevant information about vaccine/test/recovery and a unique identifier. Folks should know that the information on these certificates will not be retained by the visited countries.
Only the validity and authenticity of the certificate are checked by verifying who issued and signed it. Any and all health data will be stored by the country that issued the certificate in the first place.

The European Commission is working with the World Health Organization to ensure that certificates issued in the EU can be recognized elsewhere in the world as well. As more vaccines are administered, only time will tell when Canada will be able to implement a COVID travel strategy like this one seen in Europe.
