In a climate when the nostalgia of times past has never felt better, smells can play a central role in transporting us back to those glorious pre-pandemic days.
As lockdowns continue in Canada – especially in Toronto, which has become a ghost town – most of us are missing the sights, sounds, and tastes of our local watering hole. After all, it’s been over an entire year since we were all able to unite to cheer on our home teams, sign along with the band, or cheers with strangers. Sigh.
(We’ll give you a moment).
There is, however, a consolation. As the next best thing to being at our beloved bars in person (remember that term?), Miller Lite has released a limited line of candles called “Bar Smells.”
That’s right; they will make your space smell like some of your best beer-filled memories – whether at a dingy dive bar, a high-energy game day bar, or a bustling beer garden.
The three Bar Smells scents include Dive Bar (musk, tobacco, pine, yeast), Game Day Bar (salted peanut, jalapeno, cracked leather), and Beer Garden (green moss, warm pretzel, cracked wood, sunburn…yes, sunburn).
“We know Canadians are feeling nostalgic for their favourite bars right now so we wanted to create an experience that instantly transported them back” said Joy Ghosh, Senior Brand Director, Molson Coors. “We owe so many amazing memories to our local bars and this initiative is our way of saying thank you, and we can’t wait to be back.”
Each Bar Smells candle features a detailed description of the scents and the vibe it naturally evokes. For example, the description on the Dive Bar candle promises that it, once you take a whiff, “you can hear the musings of the ‘watering hole sage’ who has delivered wisdom from the same stool for decades.”
Meanwhile, the Game Day Bar is centred on the scents of game day snacks mixed with cracked leather. Just like in real life, the candle promises to offer a dose of jalapeno and peanuts that will “delightfully overpower the cloud of ‘excitement’ from a fan ‘literally’ sweating out the win at the next table.”
Finally, the Beer Garden candle transports you to a warm summer afternoon where anything seems possible and outdoor scents mix with sunscreen. “As your nose fills with buttery delight of a fresh-baked pretzel, you can almost feel the splinters from the wooden table that’s older than you, your parents, and probably pretzels,” reads the description. (Relatable, right?)
