Bienvenido a Calgary! From scratch mole with 27 ingredients, house-ground chorizo infused cocktails, y mas are now available in SE Calgary, with Starbelly Group opening Calavera Cantina at 4307 130th Avenue SE (South Trail Crossing). The local Mexican concept is one that Derek Mihalik, Managing Partner of Starbelly Group, says the neighbourhood is hungry for.

“Starbelly customers tell us that the southeast side of the city wants more variety and more locally-owned restaurants,” explains Mihalik. “It’s time for fresh, local Mexican, a favourite of mine personally and customers alike – we’re thrilled to have found the perfect space to bring this spirited, high-quality comfort food concept ‘close to home.’”
The vibrant 193 seat space with a 60 seat patio has been transformed into a ‘Comfortable Modern Bohemian’ restaurant by Alykhan Velji Designs, with nods to Venice Beach and traditional Mexican cantinas. On the West side of the building Starbelly Group’s recently opened ghost kitchen Pink Door Pizza remains for pickup and delivery service through the side door.
Mike Westman, formerly of Banff’s Mexican go-to El Patio Rooftop Taco joins the group as Head Chef for Calgary’s Calavera Cantina.
“For me, Mexican food is all about fresh, balanced and well-built flavours,” says Westman. “My goal is to step outside of the Tex-Mex box and serve a variety of favourites like al pastor and fish tacos, alongside bright dishes like chile-lime crusted ahi tuna salad and chilaquiles ‘nachos’.” Other locally sourced ingredients include BC made, fresh tortillas and pressed coffee from The Calgary Heritage Roasting Co.
