Lofoten Islands
Norway’s Lofoten Islands is located north of the Arctic Circle and far into the frigid Norwegian Sea. The group of islands comprises of the southern end of the Lofoten-Vesterålen archipelago and has five main islands, Austvågøya, Gimsøya, Vestvågøya, Flakstadøya and Moskenesøya.
The saying a picture speaks a thousand words, is the exact phrase to describe this Scandinavian escape. There are multiple bridges along the E10 road which connects each remote island to the next. Each island is filled with crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, incredible mountains, hiking trails, sea kayaking and even fishing.
You’re probably thinking the climate here resembles the Arctic. But, because of the Gulf Stream, it’s actually warmer then any other place in the Northern Arctic Circle. The winter temperatures rarely deep below 0°C and the summer temperatures can be anything above 16°C.
Unstad Beach is well-known in the international surfing community and it’s one of the best spots in Europe to catch wave. The westernmost island of Moskenesøya offers the best trails with several adventure companies and walking guides in their main city of Reine. And of course, you can see the iconic Northern Lights from the Lofoten Islands.
