There may still be a long way to go in the reduction of single-use plastic but companies are doing their part by launching eco-friendly products. A&W is one such brand that’s trying to change the game, by releasing the first fully compostable coffee cup in Canada.

At a first glance, the design might seem a little off, for it doesn’t completely look like a regular cup at all. But there’s a method to the madness with their new Zero Cup. To start off, there’s no room for a straw or lid, so customers can drink straight from the cup. It doesn’t have a plastic liner either, which means it’s completely recyclable. This makes them the first North American quick-service restaurant (QSR) brand to do so.
The design itself is credited to UK-based ButterflyCup, that’s known for they sustainable and toxin-free cups. The material used for making the Zero Cup is paper, complete with a water-based coating that aids in the prevention of leaks. This initiative by A&W is aimed at reducing the number of single-use cups that wind up in landfills in the country.
A&W has always been active player in the eco-friendly scene. They were the first QSR in Canada to bring in the Beyond Meat burger in 2018 and the first to eliminate sing-use plastic straws in 2019.
