If you live in Ontario or Quebec, then listen closely. There’s a brand new high-speed train route that’s coming around the mountain — sorry, I had to! From Quebec City to Montreal, Ottawa to Toronto, moving around the provinces will be easier than it’s ever been.
Canada’s Transportation Minister, Omar Alghabra, says he will be announcing the creation of a high-frequency rail that would connect the above mentioned Canadian cities. The trains would be able to travel 200 kilometres per hour, they would run on their own dedicated tracks, would offer more frequencies, and reduce trip times to the Quebec City — Toronto corridor by 25%.

An announcement is set to be made on Tuesday, July 6 and on Monday afternoon, Alghabra said he was travelling from Toronto to Quebec City for a “major announcement” concerning Canada’s HFR project.

Wondering why there’s a need for this new rail? According to the Via-Rail site, the congestion comes from sharing tracks with freight trains. The site reads, “This not only impacts our on-time performance, but it means that our train schedules and frequencies are dependent on the access we are granted by the infrastructure owners.” Furthermore, the trains would improve on-time performance by over 95%.
The minister says the HFR will allow Canadians to get to their families faster and would better connect the country’s businesses, all while reducing road congestion, and providing a low-emission travel alternative. Sounds good to us!
