So you’re planning a trip to Greece and can’t decide whether you should fly from Athens or take a boat huh? Well, I spent a few weeks in Greece over the summer and became a bit of an expert in their local transportation and can confidently say that booking a flight from Athens to Santorini was one of the best decisions I made on the trip. I took the ferry from Athens to Agistri for a day trip and although scenic, I was glad I didn’t have to be on the boat for 4 and a half hours. The best part of the ferry was the top deck but people are allowed to smoke on board which made sitting outside unbearable for me (to each their own though).

Here are 3 reasons you should fly to Santorini from Athens
The Flight is Short and Sweet
Although I think it’s worth experiencing a boat trip while in Greece, that doesn’t mean you have to take a four hour ferry! Save the boat ride for a trip to a nearby island while you’re in Athens or take a boat ride while in Santorini. Rather than spending half a day on the boat (4-5 hour travel time plus waiting at the dock, getting to Piraeus etc.) you can spend less than an hour on a flight! You likely won’t be spending more than a few days in Santorini (if you are-I’m jealous!) so you’ll want to make the most of every minute.
The View is Amazing
Sure, the view on a ferry can be nice but the waves get old after four hours right? Instead, spend 50 minutes with epic views of islands from above! I remember thinking I would sleep on the flight since it was at 6am but instead I spent the entire flight looking out the window. Definitely a highlight.
The Price is Worth it
Depending on when you book your tickets, I’ve seen one way flights as low as $17 CAD! You really can’t beat that. If I were to leave tomorrow (AKA book a super last minute trip), the price would be around $150 CAD and although $17 is much better than that, it’s not bad for such a last minute trip. Since ferry tickets usually range from $40-150 CAD, there’s really no question that flying is better!
